Four years after first introducing Kenari Nuts to the international food industry at SIAL Paris in 2018, Kawanasi returned to the exhibition in 2022.

The return came at a different stage of Kenari's development.

Since the first SIAL appearance, Kawanasi had achieved organic certification, introduced Kenari to the international organic market at BIOFACH and continued working through the requirements for European market access.

SIAL Paris 2022 therefore provided another opportunity to present Kenari, reconnect with the international food industry and learn how the market was evolving.

Returning to an International Food Market

SIAL Paris 2022 was the first major edition of the exhibition held after the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to SIAL's own post-event report, the 2022 edition brought together more than 7,000 exhibitors from 127 countries and approximately 265,000 professionals, with international visitors representing 85% of attendance.

The scale of the event made it an important environment for observing what was happening across the global food industry.

For Kawanasi, the objective was not simply to exhibit Kenari again.

It was to continue understanding the market.

What Had Changed Since 2018?

When Kenari first appeared at SIAL Paris in 2018, it was still a relatively unfamiliar product to international audiences.

By 2022, Kawanasi had made several important steps in developing it.

2018
First international exposure at SIAL Paris.

2019
Organic certification and export development.

2020
Introduction of Kenari at BIOFACH.

2021
Further international presentation of Kenari, including its characteristics, nutritional profile, applications and Novel Food progress.

2022
A return to SIAL Paris to continue developing the international market.

The return therefore represented continuity, rather than a first introduction.

Kenari was no longer simply being presented as an unusual Indonesian nut. The conversation was increasingly about its potential as a product and ingredient within international food markets.

Learning From Food Trends

SIAL describes its role as a place to observe innovation, changing consumer habits and developments across the international food industry. The 2022 edition placed particular attention on food-system transition, changing consumer behavior, sustainability and new approaches to food production and business.

The exhibition also featured SIAL Insights, which brought together international research on consumer expectations, food innovation and foodservice trends.

This made SIAL useful not only as a sales and networking platform, but also as a place for Kawanasi to observe the direction of the food market.

For an emerging ingredient such as Kenari, understanding these changes was important.

The opportunity was to identify where a distinctive forest-origin nut could fit within changing consumer and industry preferences.

Continuing to Introduce Kenari

One of the ongoing challenges for Kenari was awareness.

People familiar with established nuts already understood how almonds, macadamias and cashews could be consumed and used as ingredients.

Kenari required a different kind of introduction.

International audiences needed to understand:

  • where Kenari comes from;

  • what makes it different;

  • how it tastes;

  • how it can be consumed;

  • how it can be used as an ingredient; and

  • why its Indonesian forest origin matters.

These questions had already shaped Kawanasi's presentations at international exhibitions, and the work continued at SIAL Paris 2022.

The objective was gradually shifting from introducing a new nut toward building understanding around a new ingredient category.

The European Regulatory Journey Was Still Underway

Another important context for the 2022 exhibition was that Kenari's European market-access journey was not yet complete.

Kawanasi had been working through the EU Novel Food process, which was an important requirement for bringing Kenari to the European market.

This meant that SIAL 2022 took place during a period of continued development rather than after the European market launch.

The regulatory process would eventually reach an important milestone in 2023, when Kenari received EU Novel Food approval.

The subsequent European launch of East Forest Kenari Nuts was documented in the 2023 Anuga material, which records the approval in March 2023 and the introduction of the products to the European market.

A Market for More Than Snacking

By this stage, Kawanasi was also looking beyond Kenari as a packaged snack.

The nut's potential as an ingredient was becoming increasingly important.

Kenari could be explored in applications such as:

  • bakery;

  • confectionery;

  • desserts;

  • ice cream;

  • nut products; and

  • other food formulations.

This broader perspective is important to Kawanasi's long-term development of Kenari.

The objective is not only to create demand for finished Kenari products, but also to establish Kenari as an ingredient that food businesses can work with.

This is one of the reasons continued participation in international food exhibitions has been valuable.

These events bring Kawanasi into direct contact with food manufacturers, distributors, retailers and other professionals who can evaluate Kenari from different perspectives.

Why the 2022 Return to SIAL Mattered

The significance of SIAL Paris 2022 was not simply that Kawanasi attended the exhibition again.

It represented another stage in the international development of Kenari.

The first SIAL in 2018 was about introducing Kenari to the world.

The 2022 edition was about continuing the conversation.

It provided an opportunity to:

  • reconnect with the international food industry;

  • observe emerging food trends;

  • gather further market feedback;

  • continue presenting Kenari to potential partners and buyers;

  • understand changing consumer preferences; and

  • continue positioning Kenari as a distinctive Indonesian ingredient.

SIAL's own 2022 reporting described the event as a major international meeting point for the global agrifood industry, with particularly strong international participation.

For an emerging category such as Kenari, being part of that conversation helped maintain its visibility while the next stages of development were underway.

The Year Before EU Launch

SIAL Paris 2022 came just before one of the most significant years in Kenari's international development.

In 2023, the European regulatory journey reached a major milestone with EU Novel Food approval.

The same year, Kenari and East Forest received recognition at major international events, including BIOFACH and Anuga.

The return to SIAL in 2022 therefore sits between two important chapters:

2018 — First international introduction

2022 — Continued market development

2023 — European market access and international recognition

The journey was moving from introducing Kenari to international audiences toward establishing it as a commercially viable and recognized food product.

Continuing the Kenari Journey

SIAL Paris 2022 was another step in that process.

For Kawanasi, international exhibitions have provided opportunities not only to present products, but also to understand markets, meet potential partners and continue developing the position of Kenari within the global food industry.

The next major chapter would come in 2023, when Kenari received EU Novel Food approval and East Forest entered the European market.
